Sagadat Rakhmankul

At the age of 25, Sagadat made his debut in February, 2018. A prospect at 154 pounds, he is a former amateur standout in his native Kazakhstan.

He is a stablemate of Top Rank’s rising superstar, three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko – who was voted the Boxing Writers Association’s “2017 Fighter of the Year” – WBC light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, welterweight prospect Alexander Besputin, and super lightweight prospect Maxim Dadashev. All are managed by Egis Klimas, the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Manager of the Year” in in 2016 and 2017, and promoted by Top Rank.

In his last fight on November 3 in El Paso, Texas, he lost an eight-round unanimous decision against Nicklaus Flaz.

In an earlier interview, Sagadat said through an interpreter, “I moved here to Oxnard, California, on August 31st, 2017, and I’ve been training at the Boxing Laboratory gym four times a week. I moved here to pursue my goal, which is to become world champion.

“I’m living here with two of my friends from Kazakhstan. Meiirim Nursultanov is my roommate in an apartment, and Madiyar Ashkeyev lives with a family nearby. We all came here together and they have signed with my manager, Egis Klimas, too.

“My first boxing coach was like my best friend. We were very, very close. He was always telling me, ‘Sagadat, you need to go to professional.’ One day, my coach died and I thought I should take his advice and go professional. I had four managers on my list, but I decided to call Egis Klimas first. One of my friends had his phone number, so I called him. Egis said, ‘Give me a couple of days. I’m going to find out who you are.’ He asked my friends about me – they said I was a very good guy, and Egis decided to sign me.

“I’m a boxer who adapts to my opponent – whatever I need to do to get the win, that’s what I’ll do. I’m a very versatile boxer.

“The biggest difference between training here and training in Kazakhstan is that we work a lot more on conditioning here. We also have a very tough team for sparring. There wasn’t much sparring back home. It was mostly amateur boxing – we would fight five times a week.

“My trainer, Marco Contreras, doesn’t speak Russian but he works with a lot of Russian fighters here. He can communicate very well in the corner using his hands.

“My friends call me Saga, but I don’t have a ring name.”

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Sagadat said through an interpreter, “I was born in Taraz, Kazakhstan. I have two brothers – one is older than me, and one is younger – and one older sister. My father is self-employed in the sales business, and my mother is a doctor. I’m the only boxer in my family.

“I was 12 years old when I started boxing. One day, my father decided I was old enough for sports. He took my hand and we walked into a boxing gym.

“I had around 250 amateur fights, with around 25 losses.

“I’m naturally right-handed. I speak only the Kazakh language and Russian. I’m single, no children.”…
