At the age of 24, Mike is a four-year pro. A young contender at 140 pounds, he was an amateur standout before his debut.
He has stayed active in the ring and made good progress as a pro – he fought six times in 2013, six times in 2014, five times in 2015, and four times in 2016. He fought three times in 2017.
Mike stepped up to 10-round status for the first time on April 8 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and won a unanimous decision against Reyes Sanchez.
In his last fight on November 11 in Fresno, California, he lost by second-round knockout against 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez.
Ramirez scored a knockdown with a left hook in the second round – Mike got up, but Ramirez followed with a series of punches and the referee stopped the fight.
Mike felt that the fight was stopped too soon. After the fight, he said, “He hurt me with a body shot. It was a real big punch, but the fight never should have been stopped. The fight should have continued.”
Regarding his nickname, Mike said, “It all started, I had a with a substitute teacher. I was in the eighth or ninth grade. He overheard me talking about my fighting and he said, ‘Man, you don’t fight.’ I said, ‘Yes, I do. I’m ranked number-one in the country.’ He was like, ‘Nah, I want to see some video.’ So, I showed him some video and he said, ‘Man, we’ve got to get you a nickname.’ A couple of weeks later he said, ‘Yes, indeed,’ and it stuck.”
