Leonardo "Lenny Z" Zappavigna

ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael reported from ringside [excerpts]: Lenny Zappavigna, of Australia, dominated Fidel Monterrosa, of Colombia, en route to a third-round knockout. Zappavigna was coming off an eighth-round knockout loss to Sergey Lipinets in a grueling junior welterweight world title elimination fight and moving up in weight.

He took it to Monterrosa, dropping him three times in the third round. He beat the count after the third knockdown, but [the] referee called it off at 2 minutes, 48 seconds.

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Lenny said, “I was born in Sydney, Australia. I’ve got an older brother and a younger sister. My dad used to be a sheet metal worker. He had a bit of a work accident, so he wasn’t able to continue working. My mom is a secretary at a doctor-surgery. I’m the only boxer in the family.

“I started boxing when I was about 11. I watched the Rocky movies and I tried it just to get fit, and I was just really good at it. From there I didn’t take a backward step. I had ‘round about 90 amateur fights, with 80 wins and 10 losses. I won the Australian title and a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. I fought in the World Championships, I won the Norway Cup.

“I fight orthodox, but I write with my left hand. I use my right hand to throw a ball, but I use my left foot to kick a ball. I’m all mixed up.”…
