At the age of 27, Fayzi is a one-year pro. A sensational prospect at 135 pounds, he was an elite amateur at the international level before his debut – a two-time Olympic representative for his native Uzbekistan and the 141-pound gold medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games. He also won silver medals at the 2015 Asian Championships and World Championships.
He is a stablemate of three-division world champion and rising young superstar Vasiliy Lomachenko, who was voted the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “2017 Fighter of the Year,” WBC light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, welterweight prospect Alexander Besputin, and super lightweight contender Maxim Dadashev. All are managed by Egis Klimas, the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Manager of the Year” in 2016 and 2017, and promoted by Top Rank.
After signing with Top Rank in 2017, Fayzi fought six times in his first 18 months as a pro.
In his last fight on October 20 in Las Vegas, he won by second-round TKO against Wilberth Lopez.
Tthe scheduled 8-rounder was on the undercard of the Rob Brant vs. Ryota Murata main event. Fayzi scored a knockdown with an unanswered series of punches in the second round, and the referee stopped the fight without a count at 2:13.
In an earlier interview, Fayzi said through an interpreter, “I moved to Oxnard, California, on January 24, 2017. I like California a lot, but I’m really concentrating on my boxing.
“I train at my manager’s gym – it’s called Boxing Laboratory. Abror Tursonpolatov has been my trainer since I first started boxing.
“The training is very different here compared to Uzbekistan. It’s more professional here and more amateur there. I’m getting better and better.
“My style is aggressive – I’m more attacking than defensive.”
AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Fayzi said through an interpreter, “I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. I have three brothers and one sister. My father works in construction. My mother works in a metal factory. I’m the only boxer in my family – my father was a wrestler when he was younger, and all of my brothers are wrestlers. I was a good wrestler, too – a natural-born wrestler – but I never competed.
“I started boxing when I was 11 years old. There are a lot of guys who are athletic in my hometown with wrestling, boxing, and martial arts. I just went to the gym to get stronger and learn how to protect myself in the streets.
“I had more than 300 amateur fights, with about 15 losses.
“I speak the languages of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and Russian and Farsi.
“I’m naturally left-handed. I’m married, and my wife’s name is Shaxnoza Gaibnazarov. She’s an amateur world champion kickboxer. We have a son, Abdullox, who is two years old, and a daughter, Xadicha, who is one year old.”…
